Events Planning

Instructor: Mrs. Engle

Class Description

As a member of this class, students will be part of the committee responsible for planning, promoting and implementing the first LEAP Field Day. Students will determine some of their gifts and talents as they are actively involved in the planning, decision making and follow through for this event. Students will be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor at the end of our Spring Semester as they manage a fun and exciting Field Day event!

Special Notes:

  • This class may involve some homework and parental involvement.
  • Students in the class will be responsible for managing Field Day and may be limited in the number of events they can participate in.

Math & Science in Sports

Class Description

Do you have any idea how much math and science is involved in sports? We will look at your favorite sports from a whole new angle (no pun intended). We’ll do calculations, activities and experiments that are used in lots of different sports! It’s going to be a “ball!”

Poetry

Instructor: Mrs. Booth

Class Description

Poetry is a diverse and amazing form of expressing yourself. The way that you put your words together can invoke an image, a mood, or a thought. You can use poetry to stimulate a discussion or share ideas or you can just read it to yourself for fun! Every poem doesn’t need to be dissected…some poems are there to simply enjoy! This semester we are going to look at several different kinds of poems. We are even going to try our hand at writing our own poetry. Don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself a poet! You’ll be surprised how much poetry you have in you! We’ll look at some fun poets like Shel Silverstein and Sr. Suess as well as some more serious people like Emily Dickinson, Robert Browning and Edgar Allen Poe. We’ll find poetry in surprising places you’ll see!

A Study in Proverbs

Instructor: Pastor Charlie Baile

Class Description

This topical class on themes in Proverbs will be an interactive class to teach our youth practical wisdom that God has given us in the 31 Proverbs. Over the 8 weeks we will look at what it means to walk in wisdom and to "fear the Lord" in contrasting the wise man verses the fool on the themes covered in Proverbs. The students will be required to read a Proverb a day according to the day of the month, and they will need to come prepared to discuss the particular verses that were beneficial to them and the verses they had a hard time understanding.

The Art of Calligraphy

Instructor: Mrs. Baile

Class Description

Learn this beautiful form of writing known as calligraphy. The class will use the Italic alphabet in step-by-step projects showing a range of techniques. Practicing the basic techniques each week will be required.

The Age of Exploration

Class Description

Why would a person risk his life to explore unknown lands? What was life like on a ship during an exploration voyage? We will use discussions, primary resources, maps, timelines, and other tools to answer these and other questions about the age of exploration. Each student will also write a short report about an explorer.

Drama

Instructor: Mrs. Broadhurst

Class Description

We will be learning about acting and performing on a stage with the final goal of producing a play at the end of the semester. We will learn about blocking, stage presence, vocal projection, facial and body language, etc. through weekly games and activities.

Syllabus

  • Meet & Greet: Hand out the play for the class members to review prior to the first week of classes.
  • Week 1: Acting terms, stage locations, tryouts and parts will be assigned.
  • Week 2-7: Practice for the play while learning about the stage and acting.
  • Week 8: Perform play

 

 

Make Your Own Masterpiece

Instructor: Mrs. Chuckerel

Class Description

Students will be introduced to famous artists, their lives, peculiarities and quotes. We will examine a work of art and use it as a springboard for our own masterpiece. Students will be encouraged to share and present their original favorite work and/or artist during the final program. Come prepared to get into a mess of fun!

Special Notes:

  • Class will include no homework (unless a student chooses to further research an artist)
  • May get messy!

Syllabus

  • Week 1: Kandisnky - abstracts with oil pastels, crayon and watercolor
  • Week 2: O’Keefe – flowers with permanent marker and watercolor
  • Week 3: Chagall – dream project with crayon, diluted tempura paint and salt
  • Week 4: Picasso – “split personality” perspective with oil pastel and construction paper
  • Week 5: Rothko – color field project with tissue paper and glue
  • Week 6: Munch – expressive faces block prints with ink
  • Week 7: Hundertwasser – design your own window with whatever method you choose

Spanish

Instructor: Senora Donaldson

Class Description

Did you know that Spanish has 4 words for the word “the”, and that every noun is preceded by the word “el” or “la”? Mexico is a country with 30 states, the biggest is called Chihuahua. Spain has 17 provinces, and it does not have states at all! Spain is the country that brought horses to America for the very first time! Through songs, games and books, your child will also be exposed to Spanish and Mexican history, geography, & culture. Colors, numbers, the alphabet, days of the week, months of the year, salutations & greetings, family, and animals will be the vocabulary covered throughout the eight weeks of this class. Your child will have opportunities to repeat Spanish words and phrases, and encouraged to write these same words. Each week there will be a review of the content learned in the previous weeks including praying, greetings and singing Jesus Loves Me! This class will introduce your student to the fundamentals of the Spanish language.

Native American Culture

Instructor: Ms. Whitehead

Class Description

Come and join us as we dive in and learn about Native American Culture. We will alternate weekly from focusing on an aspect of Native American Culture, to focusing on a specific tribe. The class will include many hands on projects such as crafts, lap books, and a mini history pocket.

Nutrition Investigators

Instructor: Mrs. Herringa

Class Description

In Nutrition Investigators children will be introduced to the fundamentals of healthy eating. Through weekly interactive investigations and an ongoing individual challenges, students will be “enticed” to learn why healthy eating is so appetizing.

Special Notes:

  • Class will include occasional homework (bonus and optional)
  • Class will include some parental involvement- only if student chooses to accept a bonus homework assignment and needs help (ex. making Kale Chips, or finding a recipe).
  • Additional cost for class—None for the class, but only what might be incurred if student chooses bonus homework assignment (ex. supplies for a recipe).

Introduction to Hand Quilting

Instructor: Mrs. Ling

Class Description

This class will cover the basics of hand quilting including; how to construct templates and cut out patchwork pieces, basic hand sewing for piecing and quilting including the quilter’s knot, and how to finish a quilt. I am planning to teach two techniques; traditional patchwork quilting and a quilt-as-you-go project. The projects are intentionally small enough to allow for ample time for finishing. We will start with a doll’s quilt and the second project is a potholder. Additional projects will be possible for the more ambitious student.

  • Children will be asked to bring some basic sewing supplies.

  • Week 1: Doll sized quilt. What is quilting? The quilter’s knot (with practice), Intro to hand piecing
  • Week 2: Doll sized quilt. Joining rows, making templates, tracing onto and cutting the fabric
  • Week 3: Doll sized quilt. Making the quilt sandwich, Basting and Hand quilting practice
  • Week 4: Doll sized quilt. Review – catch up and quilt
  • Week 5: Potholder, Quilt-as-you-go method and Cutting/placing strips

Class Description

This class will introduce each student to some basic music theory. Concepts include: high & low, up & down, music alphabet, introduction to staff, line & space notes, dynamics (forte & piano), introduction to treble clef, treble clef lines & spaces, quarter note & rest, two-eighth notes, half note, repeated notes, steps & skips on a staff, ear training (up & down, same or different, rhythm recognition), rhythm drills

Class Description

Science is awesome. Food is awesome. What happens when we blend the two together? Come find out in this class where we'll get an introduction to some basic ideas of science using some of our favorite foods. Put your lab coat on and get ready to experiment, discover and enjoy some tasty treats at the same time! Each student will have an opportunity to be the lead "Budding Scientist" with a brief class presentation. Materials and equipment will be basic and most provided by instructor. Pencils required for drawing observations.

Learning the Fruits of the Spirit

Instructor: Mrs. Rachel Marini

Class Description

We will learn the 9 Fruits of the Spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-23 of the Bible. The students will learn what ‘Fruit of the Spirit’ means, and why we need it in our lives. Each week, the students will study one Fruit of the Spirit and learn a corresponding Bible verse, along with a finger play/hand motions to help them remember the verse. We will add a new fruit to our basket each week. We will do a game, craft or activity each week to emphasize the Fruit of the Spirit for that week.

Syllabus

  • Week 1: Love
    We will listen to a story about trees bearing fruit. We will talk about why as Christians we should bear good fruit in our lives. We will listen to a song about the Fruit of the Spirit. We will start a fruit basket. We will learn about Love and a Bible verse about love. We will do an activity to correspond with love.
  • Week 2: Joy
    We will review our fruit from last week. We will listen to our Fruits of the Spirit song. Then we will learn about Joy and a Bible verse about joy. We will do an activity to correspond with teaching joy and add another fruit to our basket.
  • Week 3: Peace
    We will review our fruit from last week. We will listen to and practice our Fruits of the Spirit song. Then we will learn about Peace and a Bible verse about peace. We will do an activity to correspond with learning to have peace and add another fruit to our basket.
  • Week 4: Patience
    We will review our fruit from last week. We will listen to and practice our Fruits of the Spirit song. Then we will learn about Patience and a Bible verse to go with patience. We will do an activity about patience and add another fruit to our basket.
  • Week 5: Kindness
    We will review our fruit from last week. We will listen to and practice our Fruit of the Spirit song. Then we will learn about Kindness and Goodness and a Bible verse about each of these Fruits. We will do an activity about kindness and goodness, then adding another fruit to our basket.
  • Week 6: Faithfulness and Gentleness
    We will learn review our fruit from last week. We will listen to and practice our Fruit of the Spirit song. We will learn about Faithfulness and Gentleness, and then a Bible verse about these Fruits. We will do an activity about having faithfulness and gentleness; then add another fruit to our basket.
  • Week 7: Self-Control
    We will review our fruit from last week. We will practice our Fruit of the Spirit song. We will learn about Self Control and a Bible verse to go with self-control. We will do an activity to help us learn about self-control and add another fruit to our basket.
  • Week 8: Review
    We will review our Fruits of the Spirit. We will be able to sing our Fruits of the Spirit song and say our Bible verses for each of the Fruits. We will practice writing some of them. We will put on a performance for the rest of the LEAP.

 

 

Conversation with Character

Instructor: Mrs. Hall

Class Description

Beginning public speaking skills we will be addressed while learning how to participate in conversations that glorify God. We will discuss, practice and play games that will give practice in how to start, continue and end conversations with peers, strangers and adults. Proper manners, body language, transitions and telephone manners are some of the topics that will be discussed. The students will have opportunities for role playing, participating in many conversation games and giving numerous very short speeches (30-60 sec.) Students will also be assigned challenges to practice the skills learned in the class with your neighbors, family and friends. Join this class and gain the skills to not feel awkward in conversations.

Class Description

Get ready to make some wacky, wild and crazy concoctions! We will get messy and a have a lot of fun making projects that are fresh and playful using simple household ingredients.

Special Notes:

  • I may request an occasional supply such as some pre-hard-boiled eggs, a plastic drink or yogurt container or a bar of Ivory soap

Career Travelers

Class Description

Each week students will mark a page on their "career passport" as they learn a new career. Students will explore each career with a fun book, hands-on activity, and craft.

Basic Tumbling

Instructor: Mrs. Widenhofer

Class Description

Basic tumbling techniques will be taught in an environment emphasizing both fun and safety. Children will learn through direct instruction, demonstration, and game play. Spotting will be utilized when necessary for guidance of technique, confidence or safety. Stretching and strengthening activities will also be a part of each class.

  • Week 1: Intro to tumbling body positions (tuck, pike, straddle, stretch)
  • Week 2: Forward roll
  • Week 3: Handstand
  • Week 4: Cartwheel
  • Week 5: Backward roll
  • Week 6: Variations on all skills (straddle roll, one arm cartwheel, etc.)

Circle Time

Instructor: Mrs. Richmond

Class Description

Circle Time is a fun way for children to learn foundational concepts through games, finger plays and stores. Each class will be full of hands on activities for your children to learn about basic concepts, animals, science, music, and more.
