Spring Adventures with Picture Books & Play-Dough

Class Description:
In this engaging and hands-on preschool class, we will celebrate the wonders of the spring season through picture books, sensory play, and creative exploration. Each week, children will dive into a spring-themed picture book, engage in a group discussion to observe and identify signs of spring around us, and use play-dough and other sensory materials to reinforce learning in a fun, interactive way.

Children will participate in a movement-based music class in order to learn rhythm, notes, listening, and pitch. Exploring Pond Life

Class description:
Class is designed to acquaint students with the basic geography, history, government, culture, language and regional differences of our nearest and largest neighbor.

Class will include no or minimal homework. Review of some material might be helpful so we can play some games in later weeks testing retention. No additional fees or materials are planned. Maps and other materials will be printed and provided.

Grade level (1st) reading and writing will be helpful but not absolutely required..

We will be learning Canadian geography, labeling maps (but can cut and paste labels), handwriting not required. We may be listening to history stories, learning songs, learning about Canadian traditions and holidays. We will do some crafts and coloring. Likely some documentary or other video material will be included.

Final presentation will be a group presentation on stage about what we’ve learned. Hopefully each class member will have a part.

Food can be a helpful way of exposing students to different cultures as well. So, I’m hoping to offer at least a few culinary experiences, but parent/student preference or allergies will be taken into account.

Week 1 - Galaxy Skies (Watercolor): Learn wet-on-wet watercolor techniques to paint a beautiful galaxy night sky.
Week 2 - Beaded Valentine Hearts: Create heart-shaped beaded ornaments or keychains to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
Week 3 - Friendship Bracelets: Make colorful, beaded bracelets to share with friends, using fun patterns and designs.

Take Me on a Journey Through Learning -
with Pokemon

Class Description:
“Gotta Catch ‘Em All”...all the subjects that is. With Pokemon as our common theme, we will spend each week learning a different aspect of the ever popular phenomenon.

***Students do not need any cards or prior knowledge of Pokemon to participate in this class. If your student has Pokemon cards of their own, they will not be able to use them in this class. All students will be given a set of cards to use (and keep).***
Syllabus:
Week 1: Probability - We will unveil our packs of cards and calculate probability based on what we find.
Week 2: Quality vs. Quantity…the art of trading - We will discuss quality vs quantity when it comes to trading Pokemon cards but also as it applies to many situations in daily life.
Week 3: History/Geography - We will discuss the history of Pokemon but also the history/geography/culture of its birthplace…Japan.
Week 4: Art - We will learn about the ancient art of Origami and create Origami Pokemon characters.
Week 5: Science - We will classify Pokemon as we do animals.
Week 6: Writing - We will create a Pokemon card for a real animal and talk about the amazing “powers” God gives them.
Week 7: Math - We will learn how to play the game making calculated decisions regarding metrics listed on our cards.
Week 8: Battle Royale - We will spend this week putting our learning to the test to trade cards and “battle” using the skills that we have learned.
Paper Bag Engineering

In this class, students will learn the engineering and design process through various STEM challenges. Each week, they will be tasked with a new engineering challenge and given a specific set of materials and supplies to meet it.

Can you figure out what real animals inspired certain mythological creatures? Which ones have the coolest powers, and most interesting purposes? We'll discuss it all, and even spend some time creating our own creatures with our imaginations!

Class Description:
Have you had fun learning some ASL? Learn some more! For this class, we will take a deeper dive into time signs, learn some verbs, seasons and animals in ASL, putting together more complex sentences. You will even learn how to interact with people who are deaf in a more culturally appropriate way.

Class will include weekly videos for homework. It will be imperative that the students watch the videos and learn the signs from the videos before they come to class. Class time will be used for application and communicating with each other in sign language. If the students do not know the signs before coming to class, it will put them at a disadvantage and slow down the rest of the class.

Adventure in the Wardrobe: A book study of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
Instructor: Mrs. Carr
Class Description:
Get ready to enter the magical world of Narnia! You will enjoy this fascinating story and introduction to C.S. Lewis’s fictional world of talking animals, an evil witch, a mighty lion, and epic battles between good and evil. We’ll discuss the content and unique characters of the book and your thoughts about them, as well as the Biblical principles and symbolism about Jesus to be found just beneath the surface. Students must own or borrow a library copy of the book. They will need to read the assigned chapters and be prepared to discuss them in class (including before the first class). The book is available in audiobook on Hoopla, but if at all possible, the student should bring a copy of the book to class each week (to allow flipping through during the discussion time). This will be part book club, part literature class. There may be tea involved!

Ready to dive into your creative side? In this class, you can use your imagination to make whatever you can come up with in clay. We will be using colorful, air dry clay. Each week you can add to your piece, or create something new if you've finished with a project. There will be lots of colors, and it will be a fun time to just relax and create!

TV Production & Journalism: Behind the Scenes

Class Description:
Students will explore the basics of TV production and journalism, learning how to plan, write, and present news stories. Each week, students will develop skills in writing scripts, conducting interviews, and operating as part of a team in a TV newsroom setting. The class will culminate in a live TV segment where students perform roles such as anchors, reporters, camera operators, and producers. No prior experience required; just bring creativity and enthusiasm!

We also need a few parent volunteers each week to help pick up supplies or deliver finished projects.
