Class Description
Class is designed to acquaint students with the geography, history, government, culture, language and regional differences of our nearest and largest neighbor.
Special Notes:
-

-
No additional fees or materials are planned. Maps and other materials will be printed and provided.
-
Grade level (5th) reading and writing will be helpful but not absolutely required.
-
We will be learning Canadian geography. That will require the ability to label maps legibly. An accommodation of providing the labels so they can be cut and pasted is possible, just let me know if that’s needed.
-
Depending on class composition and interest, written responses to prompts or other responsive writing can be an option. This can be as a class or available for individual enrichment. We will also be discussing French language and culture so grade level English is helpful, but again not required.
-
Reading of some history or other cultural summary materials will likely be a part of class. But, that can be read aloud. And, there are some quiz games to reinforce history and geography learning that would require reading and information retention. But, depending on class size, we could do that in teams for support.
-
I expect to incorporate some video materials as well, and may have some artistic endeavors available. We may be listening to history stories, learning the Canadian National Anthem, or other songs.
-
We will look at the Canadian government structure/ political system, so a basic understanding of the American government is helpful, but that can be reviewed briefly if needed.
-
Final presentation will have options and can be developed based on class preferences. It can be one of or a combination of: a skit, an onstage presentation, a partnership with the younger class on stage, bulletin board and map presentation, written responses. The class may have some other ideas, too.
