Harvest Time
Instructor: Mrs. Ho
Class Description:
Fall is the perfect time to engage with the concept of Harvest using Math, Science, Art, Social Studies, and Language Arts. Each week will include different gross and fine motor skills from seed art and corn shucking to dramatic play and throwing plush pumpkin and apples. Students will engage with STEM in experimenting with which parts apple floats and learning about plants and their relationship with the seasons. Students will also engage in social studies by learning about different harvest traditions around the world and US history with Thanksgiving and Johnny Appleseed. Lastly, students will engage in language arts through different fall themed books and songs.

Students will be engaging with different fruits and vegetables, please let the teacher know if there are any allergies. Students will also be working with small items like beans/seeds, slime, and playdough. If you have any concerns about your child putting items in their mouths, please let the teacher know.

In this fun, fast-paced class inspired by the Who Would Win? book series, students will explore amazing animal battles through short videos, guessing games, and hands-on activities. Each week, we’ll learn cool facts, compare strengths, and predict who would win in wild matchups like Shark vs. Killer Whale and Lion vs. Tiger. Perfect for animal lovers and curious minds!

We’ll kick off with two fierce ocean predators. Students will compare traits and make predictions about who would win in a face-off.

Week 3- Komodo Dragon vs. King Cobra
We’ll explore the wild world of reptiles and talk about venom, strength, and how these creatures defend themselves.

Fun with Clay

Class Description:
Ready to dive into your creative side? In this class, you can use your imagination to make whatever you can come up with in clay. We will be using colorful, air dry clay. Each week you can add to your piece, or create something new if you've finished with a project. There will be lots of colors, and it will be a fun time to just relax and create!

Conquering Cursive

Class Description
Build neuro-pathways! Retain information from notetaking better than your peers! Read that letter from Great-Gram! Study primary sources! Sign your name! Learning and practicing cursive has many benefits. This course is an introduction to writing cursive and beginning reading cursive.

We will learn how to form each letter in cursive – lower case and upper case. We will practice joining letters in different combinations. Then we will each learn to write our own names in cursive. We hope to examine and practice some sentences: Scripture, jokes, historical quotes and sources. Practice makes progress! Homework will just be practicing what is learned in class as opportunity and interest allows. No pressure.

Informal Logic with the Fallacy Detective

Class Description
Why do we need to know about logic? Does it really apply to our daily lives? We’ll learn about critical thinking and logical
fallacies and how to recognize them, both in our own thinking and in the words of others. When we’re finished, you should be able to recognize bad reasoning and know why good reasoning is important in your own thoughts, words, and arguments, as well as in the larger world.

Parents- I will probably be using some historic examples of propaganda, possibly from WWI or II, so there very well may be discussion of related history. Other current and past cultural/moral issues may come up, especially since the students will be bringing their own examples.

Homework: Each week you will look for at least one potential/possible/probable fallacy “in the wild” and you will need to take brief notes so you can present it to our class for discussion.

Class Description:
Have a big project due soon and don’t know where to begin? Have a test next week and you don’t know how to study? Learning doesn’t need to be stressful, in this class we will have fun and gain some skills to boost your confidence. Middle school is a great time to start working on study skills. In this class we will cover topics and skills that can carry over into any academic setting for high school and beyond. For example, students will learn about the importance of good note-taking, specific methods of taking notes and choosing the method/system that works best for them. They will also learn about long and short-term planning and how both are equally important and not mutually exclusive.

We will focus on playing, getting to know each other, and building trust through improv games. We will practice empathy, cooperation, collaboration, communication. Students will build confidence, play for the sake of play. We will engage in informal performances, build listening and observation skills, develop characters using voice, body, and imagination.
